Fish for the Rare Blueback Trout

Enjoy our special fishing package in the cool, crystal clear, refreshing headwaters of the South Branch of the mighty Penobscot River. Three scrumptious meals are included with your luxurious lakeside cottage lodging. After a hard day of fishing, enjoy great camp food and plenty of it! Snacks, boxed lunches, and whatever you need is readily available, often before you ask! No one ever goes hungry at Penobscot Lake! Boat and motor and everything you need to fish, except your license, is included in this package. Local favorite flies and lures are available for purchase at the lodge.

Fish for the rare and elusive blueback trout found in Penobscot Lake. Few waters are known to contain these arctic char or "bluebacks". The fish range in size up to 3 pounds with the char generally a bit smaller than the brookies also found here. The lake spans 2 miles at its widest point and is roughly 4 miles in length. It is a deep, cold water, spring fed lake, although there are a few inlets that offer excellent spawning habitat for brook trout as well as bluebacks. Depths range to well over 100 feet and the shoreline is predominantly rocky and rough with sections of sandy beach.

In 2009 the gates were reinstalled in the dam, effectively raising our water level by 7 feet. This adds hundreds of acres of aquatic life to the lake. It's been approximately 10 years since Penobscot reached full pond status at 1604' above sea level.

General law applies on Penobscot Lake. Lures and classic wet and dry patterns are the enticers of choice. Live bait is not allowed in Penobscot Lake but lures may productively be cast or trolled in Penobscot Lake for spring trout and char. Fish a different pond every day if you wish.  There are multiple Fly-Fishing-Only ponds within walking distance from the lodge. We have canoes on all the accessible ponds. Paths to the ponds are well maintained and properly marked. Photo opportunities are as abundant as the wildlife!
